Recent Bay Area Earthquake Cluster

On the morning of December 8, 2025 the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a flurry of seismic activity across the East Bay in California’s San Francisco Bay area, signaling a cluster of small earthquakes in the region.

The strongest earthquake in the latest wave measured magnitude 3.6. The epicenter was near San Ramon, CA, part of the broader Tri-Valley region. Another earthquake, about magnitude 2.9 struck near Piedmont, CA, jolting parts of Oakland.

By mid-afternoon Monday, the swarm had produced dozens of small quakes over roughly 15 hours. Residents from San Jose to Hercules reported feeling the jolts.

Seismologists monitoring the region emphasize that these events are fairly typical for this zone of California. The earthquakes are associated with the Calaveras Fault, one of several fault strands threading the Bay Area. Experts believe the swarms may reflect a stress release or fluid movement beneath the surface.

The latest earthquake cluster in the East Bay is a seismic reminder geological plates beneath the Bay Area remain restless. These earthquakes reinforce the importance of staying prepared. Don’t treat this as alarm, treat it as a wake-up call.

Earthquake Alert Before It Happens iOS

Protect You and Your Family

Receive emergency, government, and public safety alerts on your iPhone. In the event of an emergency, your iPhone might display:

  • Government-issued alerts for your country or region
  • Alerts for imminent threats to safety or life
  • Alerts for extreme weather conditions
  • AMBER Alerts (America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response)
  • Public Safety Alerts
  • Additional details provided by the alert originator

Did you know that your homeowner insurance policy does not cover earthquake damage?

Given the risk, now is the time to consider how earthquake insurance will provide the protection you don’t get from your homeowners insurance policy:

  • According to a recent three-year data sample, an average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0 occur yearly in California.
  • The probability of an earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 in the next 30 years is 60% in the Los Angeles area and 72% in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Your home equity continues to grow while the risk of a devastating earthquake increases, too. Are you prepared to lose all of your hard-earned equity in an instant? And if you experience a total loss, can you afford to rebuild? Now (not afterward) is the right time to consider your Earthquake Insurance options.
