Northern California homeowners are shaken after a magnitude-5.0 earthquake.
A rural area northeast of Redding, California, was rattled by a magnitude-5.0 earthquake that struck on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 10:24 a.m. Pacific Time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was about a depth of 9 miles and was soon followed by two aftershocks of magnitude-2.5 each.
While not centered in a populated area, the shaking was felt in Redding and Shasta County communities including Burney (pop 3,200) and Susanville (pop 15,200).
