A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Northern California on October 17 at 5:04 pm PT, during the 1989 World Series playoffs between rival bay area teams, Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants. The World Series came to a halt, and the nation was glued to the news to find that 63 people were killed with other 3700 injured. Power was knocked out, fires were raging, buildings were collapsed along with freeways and a section of the Bay Bridge.
The epicenter was located in Santa Cruz County on a section of the San Andreas fault. Damage was heavy in Santa Cruz County as well as in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a freeway collapse in Oakland causing the most casualties.
