The largest earthquake on the Maacama Fault, an extension of the Hayward Fault, in 75 years. In Willits, residents described a jolt so strong it felt like “a freight train running through the house.”
Homeowners across Ukiah, Willits, Redwood Valley and Kelseyville reported cracked walls, broken water lines, shattered store windows and thousands without power.

The Maacama Fault hasn’t produced an earthquake this large in generations and residents said it was the strongest shaking they had ever felt. USGS scientists were quick to note that aftershocks, some as large as magnitude 4.0, are expected in the days and weeks ahead.
