Staying Prepared: Reflections from the Templeton Earthquake
Early Tuesday morning at 9:54 AM a magnitude-4.1 earthquake occurred near Templeton. It was a clear reminder we live and work in earthquake country. The shaking was widely felt throughout homes in Templeton and residents described the moment as abrupt and jarring.
One local said it felt “like the roof was going to cave in,” while a winemaker at Grey Wolf Cellars recalled his forklift “jumping off the ground.” Luckily damage remained minimal, a fortunate outcome compared to the 2003 San Simeon earthquake that many still remember vividly.
Students at Pat Butler Elementary School also experienced the earthquake. The experience became an unexpected real world test of last month’s Great ShakeOut drill. Their principal noted how prepared both staff and students were, turning a potentially frightening moment into a powerful lesson in readiness.

Did you know that your homeowner insurance policy does not cover earthquake damage?
Given the risk, now is the time to consider how earthquake insurance will provide the protection you don’t get from your homeowners insurance policy:
- According to a recent three-year data sample, an average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0 occur yearly in California.
Your home equity continues to grow while the risk of a devastating earthquake increases, too. Are you prepared to lose all of your hard-earned equity in an instant? And if you experience a total loss, can you afford to rebuild? Now (not afterward) is the right time to consider your Earthquake Insurance options.
