Multiple Earthquakes Rattle Sonoma County Thursday Morning
Residents in parts of Sonoma County woke up to a series of earthquakes early Thursday morning, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The first earthquake was the strongest of the morning, a magnitude-4.0. It struck at 5:40 a.m. in the Geysers region, near the meeting point of Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino counties.
Within eleven minutes at 5:51 a.m., three smaller earthquakes occurred within seconds of each other, followed by another at 7:05 a.m. In total, at least five earthquakes were recorded as of 7:24 a.m.
Most reports of shaking came from communities close to the epicenter. However, one notable report came from San Mateo, roughly 85 miles away, showing the reach of the tremors despite their relatively modest size.
Thursday’s series of quakes caused a morning jolt, serving as a reminder of Bay’s position within California’s active earthquake zones.
Residents are encouraged to review their earthquake preparedness plans, ensure emergency kits are stocked, check their earthquake insurance coverage, and stay informed through official USGS updates.

Did you know that your homeowner insurance policy does not cover earthquake damage?
Given the risk, now is the time to consider how earthquake insurance will provide the protection you don’t get from your homeowners insurance policy:
- According to a recent three-year data sample, an average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0 occur yearly in California.
- The probability of an earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 in the next 30 years is 60% in the Los Angeles area and 72% in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Your home equity continues to grow while the risk of a devastating earthquake increases, too. Are you prepared to lose all of your hard-earned equity in an instant? And if you experience a total loss, can you afford to rebuild? Now (not afterward) is the right time to consider your Earthquake Insurance options.
