Magnitude-3.9 Earthquake Shakes Malibu and Surrounding Area
Southern California experienced another seismic event on Sunday night. A magnitude-3.9 earthquake struck less than a mile from Malibu. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 8:17 p.m., causing noticeable shaking in the region.
The earthquake comes just a week after a magnitude-4.1 earthquake shook the area, indicating a pattern of moderate seismic activity.
Experts advise residents to stay prepared for potential aftershocks or future earthquakes. Emergency preparedness measures, such as securing household items, having an emergency kit, and knowing safe spots, are crucial for staying safe during an earthquake.
Reports from this earthquake
Reports from residents in Thousand Oaks, approximately four miles away, describe light but prolonged shaking, with a side-to-side motion that lasted about 10 seconds. One witness described it as “a pretty good rattle.”
Residents from surrounding areas were the cities that felt the shaking, including Agoura and Agoura Hills.

A homeowner in Camarillo, CA states:
“I felt like I had to wait for it to pass but the intensity seemed to increase for just one brief moment. I don’t know if it was my fear of the unknown kicking in or what? I have been in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and it was very scary. This was a lot of swaying back and forth. The unknown possibility of real disaster striking.“
Another homeowner in Rancho Conejo, CA states:
“I felt two separate strong jolts, seconds apart. The first lasted 30-60 seconds. The second jolt lasted longer than the first. None of the proffered descriptions above describe this earthquake because it was 2 sudden, STRONG JOLTS. Heard the sounds coming from the roof. It sounded as if the roof of the house was struck twice.“

Did you know that your homeowner insurance policy does not cover earthquake damage?
Given the risk, now is the time to consider how earthquake insurance will provide the protection you don’t get from your homeowners insurance policy:
- According to a recent three-year data sample, an average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0 occur yearly in California.
- The probability of an earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 in the next 30 years is 60% in the Los Angeles area and 72% in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Your home equity continues to grow while the risk of a devastating earthquake increases, too. Are you prepared to lose all of your hard-earned equity in an instant? And if you experience a total loss, can you afford to rebuild? Now (not afterward) is the right time to consider your Earthquake Insurance options.
