Magnitude 4.7 earthquake in Cobb, CA
Cobb, CA quake details from USGS

Cobb homeowners are rattled after a magnitude-4.7 earthquake.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude-4.7 earthquake struck Northern California on Wednesday evening. The earthquake occurred at 6:34 p.m. Pacific Time, approximately 2 miles northwest of Cobb, California, and about 70 miles north of San Francisco.

Seismologists are analyzing the data from the first Earthquake of the New Year in California in 2025. Based on additional findings, the USGS could also update the shake-severity map.

Aftershocks, secondary quakes that follow the main event, can occur days, weeks, or even years later. These aftershocks may match or exceed the original quake’s magnitude, potentially worsening damage in affected areas.

Reports from this earthquake

Residents from surrounding areas, including Lower Lake, Middletown, Kelseyville, Clearlake, Soda Bay, Hidden Valley Lake, Cloverdale, Lucerne, Russian River, Calistoga, Windsor, Guerneville, Santa Rosa, and Saint Helena were the cities that felt the shaking.

A homeowner in Cobb, CA states:

“This was by far the most this house has shook over the past 25 years. It wasn’t long, but the earth sure moved quite a bit – side to side. The intensity was such that I was a little concerned about the structure of the house. It reminded me of the quakes from the 70’s in southern California. It sure felt like it was more than a 4.8.“

Another homeowner in Clearlake, CA states:

“The entire house began rocking and after ten seconds I thought it may not stop this time“

Did you know that your homeowner insurance policy does not cover earthquake damage?

Given the risk, now is the time to consider how earthquake insurance will provide the protection you don’t get from your homeowners insurance policy:

  • According to a recent three-year data sample, an average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0 occur yearly in California.
  • The probability of an earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 in the next 30 years is 60% in the Los Angeles area and 72% in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Your home equity continues to grow while the risk of a devastating earthquake increases, too. Are you prepared to lose all of your hard-earned equity in an instant? And if you experience a total loss, can you afford to rebuild? Now (not afterward) is the right time to consider your Earthquake Insurance options.
