El Centro homeowners are rattled after a series of earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.8, 4.5, and 3.9.
The Imperial Valley, California, area was rattled by a magnitude-4.8 earthquake just after midnight on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 12:36 a.m. Pacific Time, according to the United States Geological Survey. Two other earthquakes followed: one magnitude-4.5 earthquake at 12:42 a.m. and a magnitude-3.9 earthquake at 12:59 a.m.
The shaking was also felt across Heber, Seeley, Calexico, Holtville, Brawley, Santa Isabel and Mexicali.
Reports from this earthquake
A homeowner in El Centro, California, states:
“The epicenter was less than a mile from my location. It shook me out of bed, rolling and vibrating the feeling of the earthquake. I feel very uneasy since there have been 17 earthquakes in the last 2 hours. I had to walk outside with my neighbors to calm down.”
A homeowner in San Diego states:
“I was on the computer talking to friends, and I heard the walls/floors creak and felt a single vertical jolt.”
Did you know that your homeowner insurance policy does not cover earthquake damage?
Given the risk, now is the time to consider how earthquake insurance will provide the protection you don’t get from your homeowners insurance policy:
- According to a recent three-year data sample, an average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0 occur yearly in California.
- The probability of an earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 in the next 30 years is 60% in the Los Angeles area and 72% in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Your home equity continues to grow while the risk of a devastating earthquake increases, too. Are you prepared to lose all of your hard-earned equity in an instant? And if you experience a total loss, can you afford to rebuild? Now (not afterward) is the right time to consider your Earthquake Insurance options.
