Magnitude-5.1 Ojai, California
Parkfield, California earthquake details from USGS

Southern California homeowners are shaken after a magnitude-5.1 earthquake.

In Ventura County, California, Ojai was rattled by a magnitude-5.1 earthquake that struck on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at 2:41 p.m. Pacific Time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was about four miles southeast of Ojai.

The shaking was felt in Santa Paula, Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Sacramento. This earthquake was followed by at least six aftershocks measuring above magnitude-3.0. One aftershock, a magnitude-3.9 earthquake came on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at 4:39 AM.

Scott Thomsen, the Director of Communications with the Ventura County Fire Department, said the department immediately implemented its earthquake plan. Thomsen noted that the quake came just as officials braced for Hilary: “We are in the middle of the first tropical storm since 1939, and we just had an earthquake.” Earthquake scientists were quick to make clear that Sunday’s temblor had nothing to do with the arrival of Hilary.
