Northern California was rattled by a magnitude-5.5 earthquake that struck near the coast of Eureka on Sunday, May 21, 2023, at 11:44 a.m. Pacific Time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake had a depth of 10.0 km West of Petrolia.
The shaking was felt across Northern California, including Arcata, Bayside, Eureka, Ferndale, Fortuna, McKinleyville, Rio Dell, and Ukiah.
This earthquake happened near the same area as the magnitude-6.4 earthquake in Humboldt County, California, in December 2022. A week or so later, on January 1 of this year, a magnitude-5.4 earthquake struck the same region.
